Beloved Mexican singer Vicente Fernández, the king of ranchera music has died. He was 81.
“Rest in Peace Mr. Vicente Fernández. We regret to inform you of his death on Sunday, December 12 at 6:15 a.m,” Fernández’s death was announced in a post on his official Instagram account; he died in a hospital in Guadalajara in his native state of Jalisco.
Fernández was in poor health after a fall in August that forced him to have surgery.
In his signature charro outfit, intricately embroidered sombrero, accompanied by his mariachi band, Fernández brought ranchera music from the ranches of Mexico to the rest of Latin America and the world.
Fernández recorded more than 50 albums, sold more than 50 million records, and appeared in more than 30 films. He was nominated for 13 Grammys and won three. He was best known for his songs “Volver, Volver,” “Por Tu Maldito Amor,” and “El Rey.”
All funeral services, as well as tributes to Fernández, will take place at the family ranch ‘Los Tres Potrillos’, in Tlajomulco de Zuñiga, near Guadalajara.
