This Tuesday, Aug. 14, there is a primary for the Republican and Democratic nominations in the U.S. Senate race to replace Joseph I. Lieberman, who is retiring after 24 years. (There are also U.S. House and CT senate and house primaries taking place as well.)
CTLatinoNews.com reached out to the four candidates: Republicans Linda McMahon, who has her party’s endorsement, and former U.S. Rep. Chris Shays, as well as Democrats Susan Bysiewicz, former CT Secretary of the State, and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy (D-5th), who has his party’s nomination to ask them, in their own words, why CT Latinos should vote for them.
This is an important election year for the state. Lieberman’s retirement is going to leave Connecticut with a seniority deficit because U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) took over in January 2011 for Chris Dodd, who retired after 30 years in the Senate.
Latinos are a growing voice in Connecticut, which is why three of the candidates chose to answer our query. Bysiewicz’s campaign staff did not return repeated phone calls to her office inviting participation.
By the way, it’s not too late to register to vote. According to the CT Secretary of the State’s office, eligible residents have until Aug. 13 to register at their town or city clerk’s office. Unaffiliated voters can also switch their party registration today. However, it is too late to switch registration from one party to another. CT law requires that be done 90 days before a primary or general election.
The Democrats are presented first because they have top ballot position in the general election on Nov. 6. The endorsed candidate in both races is also presented first.
