HARTFORD—This spring, TheaterWorks Hartford showcases the beauty of unexpected beginnings and human connection on its stage with the Connecticut premiere of “Primary Trust.” The 2024 Pulitzer Prize-winning play opens on April 10 and runs through May 11, 2025.

The inventive and heartwarming performance follows Kenneth, who works at a small-town bookstore and sips mai tais at his local tiki bar in the evenings. After being surprisingly laid off, the 38-year-old is pushed out of his comfortable routines to confront a world he has long avoided. Forced to start anew, his personal journey leads to stronger friendships and a new perspective on the world around him.
“I’m thrilled to include this 2024 Pulitzer Prize-winning play in our 39th season, and to welcome this amazing group of artists to Hartford,” said TheaterWorks Hartford Artistic Director Rob Ruggiero. “At its core, Primary Trust is a beautiful and simple story that delivers a powerful and authentic message. I believe it will resonate deeply with our audiences.”
Written by American Actress and Playwright Eboni Booth, “Primary Trust” transports audiences to rural New York, just outside of Rochester, in the 1990s. Booth explores themes of friendship and loneliness in this performance.
Making their TheaterWorks Hartford debuts, the cast includes Justin Weaks as Kenneth, Samuel Stricklen as Bert, Hilary Ward as Corrina/Wally’s Waiter/Bank Customers, and Ricardo Chavira as Clay/Sam/Le Pousselet Bartender. The performance is directed by Jennifer Chang.
The creative team includes Nicholas Ponting on Set Design, Danielle Preston on Costume Design, Bryan Ealey on Lighting Design, Frederick Kennedy on Sound Design, Moira O’Sullivan as the Associate Director, and Tom Kosis as the Stage Manager.
