For the first time in a decade, the president of the City Council isn’t Tom McCarthy.
On Monday night, the gavel was handed off to Aidee Nieves, a council member since 2015 who represents the 137th district, which comprises all of the lower East Side. She’s also the first Hispanic woman to be the council president.
Nieves easily won the chair’s seat, getting 15 of a possible 20 votes for council president; only a simple majority of the City Council, or 11 votes, was needed. Others in the running were Denese Taylor-Moye (131st) and AmyMarie Vizzo-Paniccia (134th) who received two votes each . One councilman was absent.
