HARTFORD—A whirlwind of contemporary and classic performances has entertained audiences at Hartford Stage this past year. Wrapping up the 2024-25 season, Obie-winning comedy “Hurricane Diane” runs from June 5 to June 29, 2025.
After a hurricane storms through the suburbs of New Jersey, four women find their treasured lawns destroyed, and turn to expert gardener Diane—who also just happens to be Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, fruitfulness, and vegetation, among other things.
“Diane has a landscaping business, thousands of years of experience under her work belt, and a mythical knack for turning worlds upside down,” reads the Hartford Stage description. “The cosmic clock is ticking and at the eleventh hour, Diane discovers the fate of humanity is buried in a New Jersey suburb and that – oh, gods! – only the housewives can save us. ‘Hurricane Diane’ is a provocative comedy about letting things get a little wild in the name of the greater good.”
With wit and humor, Pulitzer Prize finalist Madeleine George comments on our societal dismissal of climate change. Zoë Golub-Sass, Hartford Stage’s associate artistic director, will be directing the performance.
“Dionysus comes back and says, ‘It’s 11:45 and we’ve done enough damage to the Earth. We need to go back to nature,'” said Zoë Golub-Sass, who will direct the comedy. “Dionysus/Diane wants to go back to permaculture, restoring gardens to our original ecosystem, with native plants and a self-sustaining ecosystem. She wants to seduce these women, and bring them back to nature and back to their gardens, back to their uncurbed self.”
The cast includes Bernadette Sefic as Diane, Katya Campbell as Carol, Christina DeCicco as Pam, Alyse Alan Louis as Beth, and Sharina Martin as Renee.
The creative team also includes Emmie Finckel on scenic design, Lillian Mae Ransijn as choreographer, An-Lin Dauber on costume design, Krista Smith on lighting design, Joyce Ciesil on sound design and original composition, Julie Foh as the dialect and voice coach, Jodi Stone on wig design, Alaine Alldaffer and Lisa Donadio on casting, Avery Trunko as the stage manager, and Alison Fischer Greene as assistant stage manager.
