The San Juan Convention Center will be hosting the 7th Sangria Fest, the world’s largest gathering of makers of the beverage, on March 15, with organizers planning to take the event to the United States in the near future.
This year’s festival will be “special” because a U.S. sangria, Chicago’s Sangria MadCru, will be competing for the first time, Reggie Ortiz, who organized the event with wife Marissa Gasparoli, told Efe.
“It’s a very big achievement because normally we go to events in the United States, where they want to know how to get their name out there and these people want to come here, so it means a lot for the country’s economy,” Ortiz said.
Sangria MadCru will be one of about 30 brands offering the traditional Spanish beverage to the thousands of people attending the festival, which has satellite events in the Puerto Rican cities of Ponce and Mayagüez.
Puerto Rico’s Sangria Fest holds the Guinness record for bringing together the largest number of people to drink the Spanish beverage, with 2,312 people gathering in 2012.
More than 30 restaurants are participating in the festival, offering traditional tapas and other delicacies.
Ververena sangria won the Best Sangria Award at last year’s festival.
