The Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission is presenting its 32 piece Famous Hispanics on USPS Postage Stamps Collection in the Upper Concourse connecting the State Capitol with the Legislative Office Building. The collection will be on display from Wednesday, April 1, 2015 through Wednesday, April 15, 2015.

The collection represents Hispanics who have contributed to society from all walks of life. People such as Roberto Clemente, Baseball player with the Pittsburg Pirates and of Puerto Rican descent, Celia Cruz, renowned Performer from Cuba, Cesar Chavez, Migrant Worker advocate of Mexican descent, and Carmen Miranda, Portuguese Brazilian Movie Star popular between the 1930s and 1950s, just to name a few.
Commissioner Danny Torres, Chairman of the Special Projects Committee is thrilled to have the stamps on display once again and during a time when the Legislature is in session. “We normally bring them out during Hispanic Heritage month which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 each year but this year we have decided to do it at a time when the Legislature is in session and thereby bring more of the public to view the collection.”
“It is an impressive collection in its beauty and diversity.” states the Commission’s Chairman, Richard A. Cruz. “We are honored to share this extensive collection with the public and felt that this is the perfect time to do so as the Legislature is in session and it would be viewed by many people visiting the complex during session” commented Executive Director of the Commission, Werner Oyanadel. “We heard many ooos and ahhs from legislators and members of the public passing through the Upper Concourse as we hung the display” states Lucia Goicoechea-Hernández, Special Projects Director echoing what other members of the staff, Orlando Rodríguez, Associate Legislative Analyst, Clarisa Cardone, Senior Legislative Secretary and intern Hugo Bagan observed.
The Commission decided to display the collection at this time in anticipation of Hispanic Heritage month celebrated in the fall. On September 15, we will celebrate with Brazilian dancers and community leaders from the Brazilian and Latino communities.
