LATINOS RALLY TO OPPOSE LOSS OF LATINO AND PUERTO RICAN AFFAIRS COMMISSION
Latino legislators and leaders rallied in support of the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission as an independent, autonomous body at a public hearing on Tuesday. They were protesting a proposal by Governor Malloy to roll the commission into a new Commission on Citizen Advocacy being proposed in the state budget.

NATIONAL EDUCATION REFORM EXPERT SPEAKS IN HARTFORD
More than 400 people attended a community-wide forum that focused on efforts to enhance children’s opportunities for success and narrow the achievement gap. This event, sponsored by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, featured national education reform expert Pedro Noguera and was held at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

A HISTORIC CONFIRMATION HEARING
A confirmation hearing was held before the General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee for Appellate Court Judge Carmen Espinosa who has been nominated to be Connecticut’s first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Her nomination was approved 40-0 by the committee and has been forwarded to the entire General Assembly for approval.

HELPING LATINOS ATTEND COLLEGE THROUGH A TAILGATE PARTY
A scholarship is presented each year to a graduating senior from East Hartford High School in memory of Paul Diaz, a 30-year plus Department of Labor employee. A tailgating party was held before the UConn vs. Buffalo game on Sept. 29. More than $1800 was raised. A scholarship presentation will be made on Nov. 15 at the East Hartford Board of Education meeting.

The Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission held its 15th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Amarnte’s Sea Cliff, New Haven. The evening awarded more than 13 scholarships to promising Latinos as well.

HISPANIC BUSINESS EXPO
The third annual Hispanic Business Expo, sponsored by the Greater Stamford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was held on Tuesday, August 14th, 2012 at the Sheraton Stamford Hotel in Stamford. It was a collection of business displays and informative presentations, combined with lots of networking opportunities for Latino businesses and people interested in interacting with them.

ANNUAL RUMBA FESTIVAL
The 4th Annual Rumba Festival of New England took place Saturday, July 21, 2012, from 3 to 9 p.m., on the grounds of the Church of the Good Shepard, 155 Wyllis Street, Hartford. The festival paid tribute to master conguero Eddie Montalvo. A two-time grammy award winner, Montalvo has played and recorded with the greatest bands in the salsa industry, including, the Fania All Stars; the Hector Lavoe Orchestra, and Ruben Blades and Son Del Solar, among others. Two local bands performed: Carlitos Oliveras y Su Orquesta Calidad; and Ray Rolón y Su Orquesta. The highlight of the evening was the incendiary sounds of the legendary Típica 73.

FUN IN THE SUMMER SUN
One of the beautiful things about Connecticut in the summer is the variety of things that can be done, whether it’s motoring about a backyard in a toy car like Adrianna Ahern; soaking up the seafaring history in Mystic as Jayden Zayas did recently; or, it’s hitting the links to raise funds for CRT’s programs that seek to end domestic violence.

A JOURNEY TO PERU
